And still we debate the root causes?

NEW YORK - Ja Rule and Lil Wayne have been arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in separate incidents, police said.
The best-selling rappers were arrested Sunday night shortly after Lil Wayne's concert at the Beacon Theatre. It wasn't immediately clear whether Ja Rule had also performed.
Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeff Atkins, lives in Saddle Brook, N.J. Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, is from Miami.

OK...so does this segue (segway?) into the spates of shootings all over urban (now suburban America)? "Regular" crime's down but brothers are still shooting (and, if they have a steady aim, killing) each other at a record pace. Folks demand "protection" yet refuse to "snitch." Black mayors refuse to step on these roaches lest they are attacked for Giulianism; they point their fingers at the chiefs of police and the chiefs point their fingers back and both whine that Bush cut the community policing (which the idiot did) but they never used the program properly in the first place. And then we come back to our "heroes" and role models of the street, rappers, who pledged so solemnly to stop calling each other niggers and then do group hugs and appear with Russel Simmons and Ben Chavis. My God, folks--when are we finally going to get real with this. You don't have to be Larry Elder or Booker Rising or any one of these black buffoons on Fox as experts to say there's a moral and behavioral component being ignored. Put these rappers in JAIL and hold them up for ridicule, not heroism. Black mayors--hunt these m-fs down, Untouchables style. Their mommas, grandmommas, etc. will sit in the pews and pray but don't worry, they aren't going to vote you out of office. Secretly, they may even thank you. Indeed, you can then stop taking campaign donations from these gangstas' laundered cash businesses (you think they make that stuff up on The Wire out of thin air?) Divert resources from blowjobs to developers (have the balls to stand up to them) toward surveillance and community policing and targeting gangs as if they were mad dogs and guess what? The shootings will stop. You don't even have to promise "job training" or "fixing the schools." Cops--get out of your damn cars and walk the neighborhoods...LIVE in the neighborhoods. That way you actually will be able to tell the difference between the good kids, the folks who mind their own business and try to live a good life, and the turds. Then no one gets shot on the way to the grocery store or Abner Louima-ized.

Lord, it ain't rocket science so don't you dare say i'm over simplifying it.

No No No! It's the cops. They are targeting our heroes for destruction! Didn't you get the memo from Dyson and Jesse?

And these are the "men" that our young boys look up to in music! Monk, Gillespie, Coltrane, and Miles are probably rolling in their graves in disqust.

Don't forget to add Lil' Flip to the list. He was recently arrested on charges of credit card fraud. A real shame, huh? Maybe they all have albums coming out and need the free PR.

First, let me say that, with the exception of Ja Rule, I do not know who any of these people are. This is probably a good thing. Second, what strikes at me is the stupidity factor. These "artists" have a substantial number of WHITE teens and young adult buying their CDs and clothing lines. However, we rarely hear about an epidemic level of criminal activity associated with the lifestyle and behaviors celebrated in the thug/ghetto culture, among this group. Ultimately, most dumb middle and upper class white kids figure out that the experience is the same bullshit as their parents' (or grandparents) counterculture movements back in the 60s. They return to their charmed and privileged lives, only keeping a single setting for the local hip-hop station their car stereos.
Black people, on the other hand, embrace this shit as their reality! Is the root cause a genetic disposition for "stupid" or "self debasing?" Perhaps there is a gene for "self-destruction?"

I found this gem while reading through blogosphere reviews of the Harlem Book Fair. I thought of your recent post regarding "Thong On Fire"...

Thanks for using this space to showcase other emerging voices and themes in black literature.

Being worth a million dollars plus and doing time for a gun charge takes a special kind of stupidity. When it comes to inner city violence though, I think its a matter of cops knocking corners and us not calling it racism. Too much denial in Afrian American culture.

Can someone tell me why a "Princeton grad" and lawyer is confused about how to spell the word segue?

Also, in his profile, he implies that others may think he's "soft" because of his Ivy League education. Is he trying to gain "street cred" by covering the infamous world of hip hop?

All I can say is--because of this brothers self-image issues, poor vocabulary, and shameless self-promotion (he drops by popular blogs to promote his upcoming Yella Patsy's boys)--I will NOT buy his novel.

Boo! Hiss!

I like Chambers's stuff. I adore his opinions because he doesn't bullshit. Truly, too many cowed folk out there or people who slaves to their agendas. I find this blog refreshing.

Now, I'd boo his penchant for stream-of-consciousness blogging instead. LOL. But he's being himself and that's cool.

To the gist of the post--Charlotte are you disagreeing with him? What is your solution? The point about the rappers speaks for itself. I am more interested in hearing what folk say about politicians and cops in our cities. Are "our" mayors really part of the blame? Or lazy cops who don't want to walk the blocks and get to know the folk they should be protecting? Do "our" folk want to do what's necessary to protect themselves?

Charlotte G.,
Sounds like you have to get a life. If you don't like what you read here fine. But this brother is keeping it real. He is honest, he is raw and he provides varied and interesting material in this forum. Even a Princeton grad and lawyer can make spelling mistakes (he is human after all). He probably didn't spell-check that day? He is a Princeton grad with two published novels and more on the way. So, I say go on Chris, promote yourself. I think it is great. He is a talented black man who is contributing something valuable.
You are a Hater!

I was just writing about this a bit. Here in LA, gang members tag crime scenes with threats to the residents who may or may not have seen anything. The majority of kids getting shot here in LA are actually not involved in gangs. They're just innocents who are in the wrong place at the wrong time (their neighborhood). Cops aren't there to serve and protect. They're there to arrest. LAPD is a para-military organization and the street shrines just keep on piling up. There are very few in the black community really trying to hold anyone accountable and that needs to change...but LA is too worried about the scandal of our mayor cheating with the Telemundo reporter.
