Subway Rape Victim: Expect More as Transit Authorities Cut Back

This was on the Today Show today. There are similar stories cropping up in locales around the nation as county and municipal governments, transit authorities, etc. cut everything from security/surveillance to police overtime to...yes...teachers. All the while fees, fares, taxes rise. I guess, as Glenn Beck and loonies like Michelle Bachmann espouse, we should spend $$$ on more guns before the evil Barackian gun confiscation arrives. Lawd. People are becoming more desperate and crazy, however, and public employees more put-upon and thus more surly, lazy. It's only human when you are not valued, or your spot's being taken by cheaper, younger or dumber folks,or folk who just a week prior couldn't speak ANY English. Or your union's impotent. Still, they soldier on almost as volunteers. Just not in NY's MTA, I guess...

    Day-um. But would I leave my protective booth to help her? Yes. But that's me. I am not an underpaid, about to be laid-off Transit worker. He did his job. he pressed the panic button. The Transit cops should have been there faster.

    It's bad you know. But it's not the MTA worker's responsibility to protect others. The appropriate armed authorities were summoned.

    It just only recently went to court, and was dismissed. A friend of mine in the city said that MTA was supposed to retrain workers and upgrade security, supposedly NOT in response to this case (?!!)but they don't have the budget for it.

    You must all be men. That's the only logical explanation I can come to to rationalize your callous, insensitive and flagitious comments ("The Transit Cops should have been there faster." ?!. WTF!?). I guess with you all, if it has boobs, better not even spit on it if it was on fire. Yeah, that particular incident happened four years ago, but guess what? Women have been raped and battered and God knows what else since then and they will continue to be in astounding numbers if this poor passive attitude continues to come from men yes, MEN. They are, after all, the ones who rape. It's so easy to say that it's someone else's problem when it's as far away as New York City, but there are women everywhere, and everywhere there's a woman is some sick, demented man that uses his strength to hurt her instead of protect her. And there's another, more disturbed party here: the one who turns a blind eye, telling himself that someone else will deal with this problem.

    You also might do better if you were to stop sounding like everyone’s stereotyped nightmare of a Women’s Studies Professor run amuck. Bad men are not the only enemy BAD PEOPLE ARE and that includes women!!!

    I read about this story earlier today & find it to be very disturbing.

    Those fools could have taken small actions to intervene on her behalf & did nothing at all.

    I don't think I could live with the fact of knowing that my inaction resulted in someone being abused & victimized.

    This woman deserves a lot of credit for going public with her story. Maybe she will encourage others to speak out.
