Yesterday, amidst the pagentry and bullcrap of an NFL Sunday night game (in which the Bears proved yet again that the NFC is a joke...sorry 'Skins fans), Troy Aikman et al expressed dismay that Tank Johnson, formerly of Da Bearz, is joining the Dallas organization. This is compliments of uber rich turd owner Jerry Jones who scooped up Terrel Owens. Pacman's flaws are legion and legend; he's but one posterchild for the thugification of professional sports.
Yet, one of my favorite gadflies, my boy Shannon Sharp, formely of Denver and then the World Champion Baltimore Ravens, asked why Aikman and crew didn't say the same thing about Michael Irvin and so many other jacked up Cowboys back in t he day. And let's be clear, this stuff indeed extended way back to Staubach and the supposedly all-American, cold and calculated Tom Landry days. Back evento...gulp...the mid 1960s and Dandy Don Meredith!!! Do you think Pete Gent just invented all that stuff in his novel North Dallas Forty (made into a mediocre, stupid film starring Nick Nolte)? Shannon wasn't shy about commenting on former teammate Raven LB Ray Lewis (who I worship, I must disclose) and the niggahshit Ray initiated during that Super Bowl killing in Buckhead, Altanta.
Politicians and preachers can do hypocrisy well. Look at Dubya on TV this morning talking utter crap and weasel-slinking when referring to the Childrens Health Insurance Program and money (borrowing cheap Chinese cash as with a massive credit card, and runaway spending on war and pet projects...hmmm...I dunno...sounds like wasting American families' money to me). Former QBs etc. should just keep their mouths shut now, especially when they didn't voice any opinions to having scumbags on their teams back when they were playing. There is no difference between old school scumbags and newjack thugs, just as this myth that somehow the Cosa Nostra was more stylish and kinder and gentler than the brothers out there, or the Mexican Mafia, or the Russians or South American cartels,Cuban mob, Chinese Triads or the Yazuka. Evil is evil. Troy, get over yourself. Shannon, keep talking...

Nat: I wouldn't go as far as to call Moose Johnston and Troy Aikman and their friends "hypocrits." I would say they are in the sports media and thus must generate ratings, readership and such through specious debates and silly fan input. In addition, they "kept their mouths shut" when they were on the team because they were "on the team." Sounds silly but that is the sacrifice you make to keep the team coherent and to win. I think this goes back to the 1960s when problems were either covered up or, as depicted in the Gent novel, strong arm tactics were used. For example, if the Falcons were a Super Bowl team in the 60s and 70s, the owner likely would have clandestinely hired some thugs to beat up or threaten the thugs associated with Michael Vick sending the not so subtle message to Vick that dog fighting is taboo.
Uh - Chambers? I would love to see one of your author interviews very soon.
No direspect dude, but I don't like football.
Tank Johnson and Jerry Jones are a perfect match. Why is anyone surprised?
What is Troy talking about when Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson (Troy and Moose's former coaches) were discussing the whole topic of picking up "problem" players and how they did it with the Cowboys on Sunday? Case in point "problem" (though not criminal) Charles Haley from the 49ers who helped the Cowboys win 3 Super Bowls.
There is not much to say when Michael "Cokey" Irvin and Leon "The Big Coke Cat" Lett were on the team with Troy and Moose. Granted their problems were a little different than Tank's but Nate Newton another former teammate was caught transporting pounds of weed the year after he retired from the league.
The thing that gets me is how "Cokey" Irvin got in the Hall of Fame before Art Monk after he just got arrested again for possessing marijuana in his car.
Tank has professed that he has learned his lesson after his friend got killed and Jerry Jones believes his talent could help them win another Super Bowl as Charles Haley helped them without being a problem. Winning is paramount, you would think that Troy would mention this scenario and then move to the next topic.
Irvin and Leon Lett very likely did have the problems that Tank has/had but it just didn't escalate to violence. Troy needs to shut the f**k up. The Redskins should have their problems now. The 2-0 start was a fluke because it was against teams that did not have their sh*t together. the Cowboys are going to kill them.
But as Nat Turner alludes, does ANYTHING in the NFC matter this year. The Pats, Steelers and Colts are going on a rampage, and there likely three more AFC teams, including the crazy-ass Ravens that could beat the best teams in the NFC--even the Cowboys and Packers.
Every now and then NT has to post something we normal people can relate to, "Pebbles," so let us have our fun.
Currie said it best. But so did Snowman. Sports commentators love to generate this bullshit to stir the pot and get ratings. This stuff is a combo of Troy Aikman's and Moose's ignorance and the greed for those ratings. Beyond that, it's of interest only to Cowboys fans, of which I am not.
Who cares? It's the Cowpokes which by default means a bunch of degenerates.
