Me, unexpurgated
Compliments of Felicia Pride of The Back List, at toward the end of a long day at the Capital Bookfest. This is me, unexpurgated. Jeez...the camera indeed adds ten (twenty) pounds. Many of these views presented in the video aren't new; I've used the dessert-dinner metaphor since I was on the old BET News (remember BET had news) BET Tonight with Ed Gordon...

You are not a "hater". Like you said, the key word is balance.
The same thing is going on in the film world. The studios are looking for Tyler Perry type movies. Good for him making $$$ but we are a diverse group of people, let's see some variety.
I wonder how Karen Hunter felt about Terry's email.

However I agree with much of what you say. I don't see the situation changing unless fans, not artists, demand better art, music, etc.
I don't think you're a hater either. I agree with a lot of what you say. All we need is diversity of views of the community.
I'm convinced that if you had authored that "Their Eyes Were Watching Smut" piece for the New York Times and used the treat-dessert metaphor the nature of this debate would be much different now. People need to listen to you more!
Chambers I agree with you too. You are not hating. Just reference the new Tyler Perry movie -- i don't know anyone that calls anybody a "trick". What is that? Love your points and keep talking brother!

We are the writers that have to change our own image of ourselves, and then change the world's image of us. I admire the fact that you are making a mark in mystery and comics... areas not traditionally associated with Black characters. We have to stretch and grow as a literary community, and I wholeheartedly agree with the dinner/dessert analogy. Now, if only we could get the same awareness happening with the segment of rap music that denigrates and stereotypes us.

I agree with everything u said , especially about self publishing , so many people are doing it , artists , poets such is Moore black press ( jessica carre moore ), just to name a few .

I loved this interview. I am not an afficiando of African American "popular" fiction but the author conveyed everything I needed to know.
