Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler...

...and Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married. "30 Rock" over 15 moronic reality shows and dancing stars. John Adams over Chance. Who'd of thunk it? Hollywood gives up escapist brain candy like Marley & Me and bullcrap to meet the expectations of Joe the Plumber and the Palins. Tyler Perry and TD Jakes do more damage than D.W. Griffith. Spike Lee thinks he's Cecil B. DeMille. Despite all of that, we have these little gems. Only in the age of Obama can these be appreciated. Go see them (if you're an unrepentant perv you should at least see Marissa Tomei as a lithe stripper in The Wrestler). Rent them when they come out. I guess all this "hope" talk might bear fruit for our culture. You can have uplifting stories without being silly. You can have an dark edge, tell truth, yet still coax redemption.

Speaking of culture, it seems the South as failed again--their NFL teams choked worse than "red" precincts on Election Day.

Thoughts?

January Jones was as robbed as the Tennesee Titans! That Vampire show on HBO is stupid, and o way Anna Paquin should have won, come on.
Likewise so was John Hamm. "Mad Men" was robbed this year, period.

Check your facts, Prophet Nat: Anne Hathaway lost to Kate Winslet!!

On the real I have not seen Wrestler but my "unrepentent perv" brother was quite impressed with Marissa Tomei's body. I have seen clips of the film with Rourke's scenes and it is breathtaking in very grim, blue collar sadness. He'll win an Oscar if that's what the whole movie is like, Nat.

Slumdog is sweet and gritty. I loved it.

Nicely mean attack on Spike. In the hands of someone taller Miracle at Santa Anna would have been a masterpiece and a GG winner.
Regarding TD Jakes I read that your favorite bammas (down in the dirty-dirty) have rented buses to see Morris Chestnut's pecks. I am sad Taraji has to appear in that mess.

PS I am weeping for my favorite hillbilly, Eli. What happened to my Giants?!

I beg to differ. "Slumdog Millionaire" made a fairy tale out of the grinding poverty in this so-called "powerhouse" of India, as well as the toxic relationship of Muslims and Hindu in Mumbai, whether in slums or among middle class people.

Forgive me but I left this on What About Our Daughters Blog:

Perhaps the other commenter is right. Perhaps most of us are coarse and silly re: our tastes. We should likely admit this as much as we should admit harsh truths about violent crimes in our communities and crimes against women and girls in our homes?

(In other words, perhaps Bill Cosby is right and Prof. Dyson’s wrong? LOL)

I'm interested in seeing Marley & Me, but admittedly more so because part of it was filmed right around the corner from me.

If I want to see a documentary about India I will rent and re-veiw Born in the Brothels.

India is a country of unrelenting and grinding poverty, a country of economic and social caste systems, a country whose violent and toxic relationship between Muslim and Hindu is unending but why dump on a film about one young man finding a way to a better life?

Slumdog Millionaire is a film about hope and unswerving love...without these two fundamental emotional elements what is the point of life?

I found the movie to be joyous and uplifting without being manipulative or pandering. I did not leave the theater feeling that all was well in India and that the issues of poverty, classism, colorism, religious intolerance, and zealotism had all been solved through my two hour viewing of Slumdog Millionaire.

I'm tired of the Indians, and there so called economic engine, the largest democracy on earth, and two thirds of their people live in grinding poverty! How appropiately titled...Slumdogs!

I choose 30 Rock, and my girls Viola and T Henson got robbed this year, better luck oscars!

"I'm tired of the Indians"

You wrote, so american, so ignorant!
As if there is No poverty in the USA!

Do you have ANY idea of the contribution of India to humanity, in areas like science, Arts and humanity?

You should be ashamed of yrSelf!

Thats why your ass is in Europe and not Nigeria, LAGOs is second cousin to slum dog, with all the revenues your countrymen are pumping and stealing out of the delta, your homeland should look like Dubai!

As for being a ignorant Amercican, we Black Americans set the tone for people of colour around the world, NONE of you have the Historic or Cultural impact that we have. And ask any poverty stricken person in the states if they would want to switch places with our brethren!
