My husband saw this. I was watching "True Blood" and then he turned to "Mad Men." Suddenly I heard him yell, "Oh no!"

Well, the show is from the '60s and I'm sure that was happening more so in the open than it is now. I guess that's why I never bothered watching.

The crazy thing is that they do try to imitate the culture. I've watched it on and off with my husband and there are interesting changes. Firstly is all of the smoking and drinking. Even for pregnant women. The second is that all of these children were TRULY named "Bobby" and "Sally" back then. The other thing that is controversial in a subtle way is that the parents a re very short with children. There's no coddling or telling children that they are little godlings LOL!!

Republicans? I think not....
These were are soon to become extinct JFK Democrats of the late 1950's & 60's.

As I mention to you before Nat this is one hell of great period piece on cable TV… I hope you’re encouraged to keep watching! The JFK Dem’s extinction event is sure to come up this season....

The episodes have a pretty clear arc to them in that the characters are indeed mostly Republicans. After that song was done in Blackface, they were talking about Nelson Rockefeller and bemoaning Barry Goldwater. In a sense, these people, as racist as they were, were the last of the "Eastern" Republicans, not "JFK Democrats." The Republicans of today bear more resemblence to the fundamentalist Southern Democrats who abandoned the party because of Kennedy and LBJ.

Re: Georgetown: To expand on your points -
1st) Rockefeller is closer to a JFK Democrat than Goldwater. HE was the GOP’s answer to Kennedy, BUT a wealthy East Coast family of progressive republicans. Pro-business, low taxes, strong defense, staunch anti communist, and socially progressive. My how Dem’s and Rep’s seemed more alike back then… :)
2nd) East coast white liberal racism was, is, and always will the dirty secret of their party. Dem’s in the North could always sleep smugly hiding behind the obvious sins of their brothers in blue in the south. Bemoaning such ugly violence and words while permitting a perverse and pervasive policy of "N.I.M.B" among the Liberal Democratic Whites in the middle and upper class enclaves of the East & North East States.
3rd) Previous seasons featured episodes dealing with the “change in the air” such as the election of Kennedy. While the younger staff drinks, smokes, chases skirt like the old boys there is a palatable underlying friction between young and old to the social changes taking place. Drapper seems a transitional man between the old and new… Acknowledging the change and even dabbling amongst the changers such as his dalliance among Beatniks…
4th) To be fair Southern Dem’s actually abandoned the party more over LBJ than Kennedy.

5th ) The truth is that it was a time when the middle of both parties exerted more control within each party and the US political landscape - A far cry from today!

That was so in keeping w/ the show it literally didn't register. Remeber Edward Brooke became the Republican Sen from Conn around this time.

I thought "She's mighty mighty lettin it all hang out" Joan was the star of the show. "Stop talking" was such a put down you know everyone went WTF

Thats my problem, not yours. Both of them smiled derisively. He answered quietly, gravely, No. She looked at him blankly. Miss Taggart, I dont see the point of your questions. We are dealing with a matter of science. Stadler, she said, her voice low. They majored in two subjects—mine and Hugh Akstons.

She let her gaze trail slowly up the smooth, bare skin of his legs. Once she found it, she turned it toward his breath, met his lips with hers. You dont need help. The noise from the spectators filled the wideopen space, excitement building as oiled bodies grappled. Only then did she become aware of the attention of the others in the balcony. They sat on the dusty floor of a wide cavern. Gala grinned back at Eyrhaen. Her sound roused the couple lying before her. She loved them as much as she loved her parents. Thank you for all youve done for me. She dropped her gaze since her face was still tilted by Brevins fingers. At first she didnt understand, but then there was Brevins flinch. He grinned when she licked her lips. While enjoyable, shed yet to have sex and feel the bare, physical beauty of it. The larger part of her brain writhed with the rest of her body. One hand braced on his breastbone, she lifted higher on her knees. I have all the time in the world for you. His demeanor this night was different. His bold words cut through a world of insecurity. He watched, eyes hooded, as she climbed to her knees, then edged toward him.

His skin—and hers—had already sprouted beads of oily lubrication to ease the grinding of bodies. She simply occupied a part of his brain, and now Radin was there as well. Youre an infuriating man. He didnt look up. They deserved to find comfort.
