Scooter Libby might be the double espresso black folks needed. No, it's not because brother Reggie Walton (he's an imposing dude...I sat with him in the cafeteria at the Federal Courthouse at 3rd & Constitution last year and he frightened even me) presided, and slapped him down with 2 1/2 years in prison. And it's also not because this is but one of many evil chickens coming to home to roost in the coop that is the Bush White House (Scooter being the highest ranking White House aide to go to the slammer since the Nixon Administration, and yes, Cheney and Rove are still lying).
Nah, it's not for any of these admittedly venal reasons that I thank Scooter.
Rather it may serve to shut up the assorted miscreants, activists and trivial fools who defend the likes of Bill Jefferson. It serves to jolt others to their senses. This clown is caught literally red-handed, abusing the public trust, for who--the slimey dictators and other corrupt turds who run Nigeria, and pretty much every other African nation. I digress, but perhaps we as African Americans need to leverage regime change over there, and stop this wistful, mythic/fairy tale view of the place. (Also, this is the same nation who's bishops see fit to tell our Episcopal Church how it should be run...when there is disease, death, corruption and the utter pissing away of all of that oil cash). But again, I digress. See, we have folks who excuse Jefferson by saying "Oh, white politicians do this all the time. Oh, they never get caught and never get punished. Oh, he serves his constituents, and Mr. Charlie's afraid of him, so they set him up." Yeah, the same way they set up Mel reynolds when he tried to have sex with a 14 year old girl? There are folks here in DC who are trying to excuse the actions of the crackhead who ran over dozens of people in Southeast this weekend. How? "Oh, the cops were chasing her. Oh, the cops should have stopped her but didn't." Neither was true. Almost as silly as the folk who actually think Rep. Cynthia McKinney is normal...or the this retard Sheriff Harry Lee & bammas misguided churchladies who re-elected Jefferson despite what has happened. READ THE INDICTMENT, SET DOWN FROM THE GRAND JURY IN THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF VIRGINIA BY CLICKING HERE.
We have politicians like Bill because there are too many folk like the excuse makers. White America can afford Scooter Libby (and no, Bush will not pardon him). We can't afford Bill Jefferson. Maybe he and Scooter can share a cell...tattoo each other names on their thighs. In the mean time, I'll be enjoying a double espresso, saying with sadness and not gloating "If I told y'all once I told you a thousand times..."

I agree with you. Why do we stand behind self-serving people like Cong. Jefferson, yet leaders and causes that reflect selfless good, we often ignore?
However what happens to your theory if the jduge had been a Bush appointee and either found him not guilty or sentenced him to a month in jail?

"A field of a dozen candidates began circling Jefferson in the primary. He
finished first, but with only 30 percent of the vote, inspiring conjecture that his performance amounted to repudiation of an incumbent and that he would surely lose the runoff against state Rep. Karen Carter, D-New Orleans.
Instead, Jefferson, 59, scored a dramatic upset by racking up huge pluralities in African African-dominated precincts in Orleans, and winning outright in Jefferson Parish, where Sheriff Harry Lee had spent his campaign.
The final margin for Jefferson in Jefferson Parish was 71% to 39% - a margin that can be attributed to Sheriff Lee's furious political assault in the closing days of the campaign. Lee not only endorsed to Jefferson, but in the final days, urged Jefferson Parish residents to stay home and not vote. The final tally shows that while 28% of registered voters cast ballots in the primary, only 15% voted Saturday.
Jefferson's victory was even more confounding because the Second Congressional District race was missing all the advantages that usually come
with incumbency. Carter had the edge in funding raising, including from business interests that had backed Jefferson in the past. Most of the high-profile endorsements - including those by two former Louisiana senators - went to her, as well.
Jefferson seemed to have secured his upset victory not in public debates or
increasingly vicious ad campaigns but in grassroots campaign efforts that carried him to dozens of African-American churches, and, although he isn't a
drinker, to many a Second District bar."
My view: these "bammas" (I hate that word but you may be accurate) were sending a reverse indictment in the same way the OJ Simpson jury was sending a message. Many of these folk were Katrina victims and extremely bitter with their treatment. This was their way of getting back at "the system." I cannot understand the motivations of Harry Lee, however. His behavior is beyond comprehension.
Everyone has an agenda. The Republicans supported Jefferson over Crater because he was actually more conservative. He played to the pastors, he opposed same sex marriage and abortion, gun control. He talked agood game on economic empowerment but starngely voted for making it more difficult to clear consumer debts in bankuptcy and stop excessive bank fees and interest rates. But they also like him because they knew his reelection would cause problems for Pelosi.
On the other hand, he people who support Jefferson can turn to the fiasco at Fox News [confusing Conyers for Jefferson] as vindication, and that is the main issue.

I truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our world, and I am 99% certain that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.
I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as the price of memory decreases, the possibility of uploading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could encounter in my lifetime.

Electronic memory is something that I seemingly will never have enough of. It feels like megabytes and gigabytes have become an inseparable part of my day to day existence. Ever since I bought a Micro SD Card for my Nintendo DS flash card, I've been on permanent watch for large memory at cheap prices. It's driving me crazy.
